South Canterbury Club Pleased

The South Canterbury Jockev Club’s financial result in the last two difficult years is one few South Island racing clubs have been able to better, says the chairman (Mr A. J. Parris) in his annual report.

The elub’s T.A.B. payment I this year was lower than the: previous season’s by $2641, so ! the club started the 1966-67 season that much behind, Mr : Parris says. Last year the i club showed a profit of $1795, ' and this year a profit of $350. i The club had been fortunate in having fine weather for each race day. Bad weather on one day could have in-i volved the club in a heavy loss.

The club’s turnover for the year was $245,700 on-course and $545,452 off-course, compared with $218,020 on-course and $418,474 off-course last season. The club’s T.A.B. return, which is due in October, should be considerably higher than last year’s return and will be an excellent start for the new president and executive, says the report. Mr Parris says that every item of expenditure was carefully scrutinised by the committee, but discretion was used. “A saving in costs is of little value if it causes a loss of revenue, good-will and confidence.” he says. “We consider we have struck a reasonable balance on your behalf. We took action early. We did not wait for events to decide policy for us too late.”

Under the club’s rules offices cannot be held more than five years without a

break of two years, and Mr i Parris will not be eligible for the presidency this year. An election will be required for the five-man executive committee. Those offering themselves for the positions are Messrs R. H Balfour, J. Drinnan, P. P. Hudson, E. J. Richards, J. S. Satterthwaite, B. I. Stewart and D. G. Taylor.
