AUCKLAND.
On Saturday night a dashing victory in the September Handicap at Alexandra Park took Miles Gentry into 2:11 class and one win off qualifying for the New Zealand Cup at Addington Raceway in November.
He will attempt this on the second night of the Auckland meeting this Saturday. Miles Gentry will be on 12 yards in the Ferguson Handicap, but this should not prevent him making a bold bid to complete a fine double because he is a faster beginner. Miles Gentry’s owner, Mr H. S. Barry, said that winning a New Zealand Cup was one of his greatest ambitions. “I went close a couple of times With Miles Gentry’s sire, Gentry,” he said yesterday. “If ‘Miles' can qualify, he will go a great race I am sure.” Miles Gentry finished brilliantly in the September Handicap and snatched a laststride decision from Viking Water. Superior Chief did good work in the straight to be third and Mister Chips was a creditable fourth. If he enters New Zealand Cup class. Miles Gentry will have achieved the distinction of qualifying for the dominion’s premier pacing race while still actually a three-
year-old. He waa a late October foal.
Mr Barry got a bargain when he purchased the dam, Dawnlight, about six years ago for $4OO. Miles Gentry has earned $5675, the result of nine wins and nine platings from 27 attempts.
