WELLINGTON, September 19. Deaths by suicide this year in New Zealand will number about half the total of motor accident fatalities, according to the Department of Health.

A statement by the department today said that about 250 people will die of suicide this year, • rate of 8.5 per 100,000. Suicide rates (per 100,000) in other countries are: Hungary 26.5, West Germany 19.1, Sweden 18.7, Switzerland 17.5, Australia 14.5, Britain 11.8, and America 10.8. Mexico had the lowest rate, 1.9. In 1964 730 women attempted suicide compared with 330 men, but only one woman in nine succeeded—a

total of 80—whereas 127 men, one in three, were successful. The department said that in 1965 there were 242 suicides and in 1966, 246.
