The Frankton mare, Olwyn Ann, comfortably beat the first-day winner Don’s Delight in the Makaraka Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double at the Poverty Bay Turf Qub’s spring meeting yesterday. The off-course double— Foxonewa and Olwyn Ann — paid $l5 for $l. The five-year-old Matamata gelding Foxonewa, won the first leg, the Grant’s Scotch Whisky Handicap, by a nose from the top-weight, Anne Lane. In the early stages Damar led Matawera, Anne Lane, Foxonewa, Kublai Khan, Surgaway and Ta Vince. Five furlongs from home Matawera took over from Damar, with Anne Lane and Foxonewa just ahead of Kublai Khan. Anne Lane went to the lead in the straight and Foxonewa quickly challenged, to win by a nose. Anne Lane was three lengths clear of Kublai Khan. Then came Matawera, Surgaway, Damar and Ta Vince.'

In the Makaraka Handicap, the early pace was set by Don’s Delight and Land Ahoy, closely followed by Capacity, Lord Snowdon, Beechwood, Holy Smoke and Happy Return. Olwyn Ann headed Don’s Delight in the straight and Happy Return came with a strong late run for third, just ahead of Double Blue, Hygi, and Royal Fleet Then came Capacity, Lord Snowdon, Beechwood and Holy Smoke.
