$1773 For Y.M.C.A. The total amount collected in Christchurch Y.M.CA.’s annual appeal on August 24 was $1773, the general secretary (Mr R. J. O'Kane) said yesterday. Of this, $4OO was raised at stalls in Sydenham and Cathedral Square. Mr O’Kane said that the money would be used for the association’s youth programmes, which received assistance mainly from the annual appeal and the monthly appeal to business firms. Last year there was a deficit of $3386 in the association’s funds because of the heavy cost of youth work and branch activities, he said. Applicants Increase The number of applicants for training as primary teachers has increased to 430 in the Canterbury Education Board’s area. Because the final quota for acceptance has not been settled, the board will continue to receive inquiries. Interviews for firm applicants will begin this month. New Bridge Work began yesterday in preparation for the demolition of the Madras Street bridge. The bridge will be closed to traffic next Monday. The contractor, Williams Construction (Canterbury), Ltd, expects the building of the new bridge to take about 12 months. The company’s tender of $70,637 was accepted by the City Council on August 21.
