NEW WOOL REQUIREMENT
(N.Z. Press Association) MASTERTON, Sept. 6. By March, 1968, all manufacturers using the International Wool Secretariat Woolmark will have to make their woollen garments from shrink-resistant yarn. This was announced in Masterton last night by the man-aging-director of the secre-
tariat (Mr W. J. Vines). The main objection to woollen garments has been their poor washability, , said Mr Vines. Now that many processes made wool washable without shrinkage, the secretariat had decided to make it compulsory for the more than 17,000 manufacturers licensed to use the Woolmark to employ shrink-resistant yarn. Mr Vines predicted that within half a generation poor washability of woollen clothing would be a thing of the past. FULL SUPPORT Unanimous support for the International Wool Secretariat’s policies and activities was expressed by the Dominion meat and wool section council of Federated Farmers at its meeting in Wellington today. After an address by Mr Vines, the Auckland provincial president (Mr W. R. Martin), called for the council’s continuing and active involvement with the I.W.S. Mr Vines , left Wellington tonight for Australia. CHAOS FORECAST
New Zealand’s unwillingness to sell its wool at ruling world prices could lead to economic chaos, an Auckland woolbroker warned today.
Mr E. Lichtenstein said: “The new floor price is not
acceptable to the overseas users of our wool. As a result we are virtually handing the business to our competitors in the synthetics field and to Argentine and Uruguay who produce wool similar to our own and who have been meeting the market”
Mr Lichtenstein said the stock of 660,000 bales of last
season’s wool held by the Wool Commission was a depressing influence for the future. “The fact that the commission is entering the new wool season with a lower wool price does not by any stretch of the imagination mean that the new clip will ‘flow into the pipe-line’ to quote Mr Vines. “I think I can say that without exception the exporters in New Zealand hold the opposite opinion. All the signs point to the commission taking a substantial quantity of the new season’s clip,” he said.
