CHANGING STATUS

G. Le Cren To Coach The ranks of professional swimming coaches in Christchurch will soon be swelled by G. R. Le Cren, a former provincial sprint freestyle champion and record-holder. Le Cren, who teaches at the Linwood North School, will join the Wharenui club's professional coach, Mr V. T. Parkhouse, on a part-time basis.

From next month he will work with Mr Parkhouse outside school hours, with a big concentration of effort during the Christmas holiday period. The 23-year-old Le Cren has proved his worth as an amateur coach with the Christchurch club. As a competitor, he was renowned for his grand efforts over short distances; his sprint duels with the New Zealand champion, G. E. Dann—who is now a professional coach as well—provided many exciting moments at the Centennial Pool in the early 19605. As a member of the Taylor’s Mistake Surf Life-saving Club he has been a prominent figure on Canterbury's beaches. He is a former national junior belt champion.
