A.A.C. WILL EXPAND TECHNICAL SERVICE

, Further expansion of the technical department of the Automobile Association (Canterbury) will be necessary, and the desirability of acquiring property for expansion, possibly in conjunction with a branch office, is under constant review, says the president of the association (Mr T. W. Milliken) in his annual report. The report will be presented to the annual meeting of the association on October 10. To meet the increasing demand for vehicle inspections a fifth technical officer was appointed. Altogether 3373 inspections were made, and there might have been more but for the Budget provisions on the sale of used cars. Officers of the association helped 2345 motorists and erected 2479 signs, and the modernisation and development of motor camps was carried further by the completion of a second block of five cabins at the Carter’s Beach camp, Westport, and of a new kitchen-laundry block at the Hanmer Springs camp. Substantial improvements were being made to the ablutions block at the Hanmer Springs camp and a contract had been let for the construction of five cabins. The number of subscribers to the “New Zealand Motor World,” the official organ of 14 automobile associations, was disappointing. The journal was being changed to a nfagazine format, and would be published bi-monthly. In a leaflet with the annual report, the general manager of the association (Mr E. S. Palliser) says a comprehen-

sive travel service is being offered to members. This has been made possible by the appointment of the Mount Cook and Southern Lakes Tourist Company, Ltd, and Mount Cook Airlines as official travel agents to the association. The company will have an office near the association's touring department. Internal and overseas land, sea and air bookings, and hotel and sight-seeing arrangements will be made. The association’s touring department will make* motel and tourist flat reservations.
