PLANS FOR N.Z. MANUFACTURE
(N.Z. Press Association) NELSON, August 31
A 60-seat hovercraft for ferry and commuter use might be built in New Zealand, the chairman of Cook Strait Hover Femes, Ltd., Mr P. Chubb, said from Paraparaumu today.
“We have become the New Zealand agents for the South-ampton-based firm of Hovermarine, who are the builders of this machine,” he said. “We want to sell two here and once they proved themselves we plan to manufacture them.” The hovercraft is con-
structed partly of fibre-glass, and could be built in New Zealand quite easily.
“They will have great potential in New Zealand for certain operations. They can provide fast, efficient ferry services at a low cost of five cents a passenger mile. “As an example they could run between Wellington and Eastbourne in 10 minutes at a cost of 30 cents a passenger. They would be of special bene;fit in places such as the Hauraki Gulf or the Marlborough Sounds.” Fifteen of the hovercraft, worth $130,000 each, had been ordered in Britain and the first would be delivered to British Railways in two months. The machines could be delivered to New Zealand by the end of next year.
