Heathcote Rates
Sir,—As a ratepayer T would like you to inform me if we as ratepayers in the Heathcote County have any redress against the council if it levies any extraordinary increase in the rates this year. The council has consistently “put it across” us over the last four years by not disclosing the true state of its finances and inability to plan and manage properly. Last year it took advantage of the considerable increase in valuations to increase its income and also “hit under the belt” by increasing the rate per £. Don’t you think, taking everything into account, that the Government has failed us by not appointing a Commissioner?—Yours, etc, A RATEPAYER.
August 8, 1967. ["The county is well below its allowable maximum, and no extraordinary increase is contemplated,” said the Heathcote County chairman (Mr C. D. Le Comte. “The council has hot consistently ‘put it across’ anybody. The annual returns have been tabled at public meetings and have been available for inspection. Councillors expect no thanks for the many hours they spend on county affairs but I can assure your correspondent that these public, spirited men are very sincere in their beliefs,” said Mr Le Comte.]
