DIABETES FILM
Christchurch Showing
An 1100 ft film on the diabetes survey made in Rangiora is expected to be shown in Christchurch for the first time next month.
The president of the Christchurch Diabetes Society (Mr E. Blain) told members of the society this week that the screening was being arranged by the society in conjunction with the Canterbury Research Foundation.
The society had, with financial assistance, sponsored the film, and it was taken with the consent of the surveys committee. It was taken by Mr K. Donaldson and edited by him and his staff at the photographic department of Christchurch Hospital. Final processing and sound-tracking had been completed by the National Film Unit, and the commentary had been given by Dr. D. W. Beaven and Mr J. Murray. The film covered all aspects of the survey and gave valuable information on the incidence of diabetes in a New Zealand community, Mr Blain said. A full diabetes survey of such scope had not been attempted before in New Zealand, and in Rangiora more than 93 per cent of the adult population had been involved.
A sales stall would be held in Cathedral square tomorrow, the meeting decided. Mr Blain said one fund-raising project a year was necessary to assist administration expenses and enable increased grants to be made to the National Diabetes Research Fund.
The fund would Initially be used to finance a New Zealand diabetes research fellowship, and an educational section of the fund would also be used to encourage visits of diabetes specialists from overseas. Mr Blain told the meeting that the society had applied and was now registered as an incorporated society.
