BONN, August 15.
The United States is no world police force and should leave Europe responsible for its own defence. Senator Mike Mansfield, the Senate majority leader, said in an interview published in Bonn yesterday. Questioned in the weekly news magazine “Der Spiegel,” he said planned American troop withdrawals of 36,000 men were not enough. “As a first step it is a good measure, but only as a first step,” he said.
“It is time the European nations themselves took over the burden of their own defence.
“I am not of the opinion we should interfere in local conflicts. I think we have interfered too much already in the world. It is time to revise this policy. We are not policemen of the world.”
