FIRE IN SHOP
Lincoln Rd Blaze
A fire in a draper’s shop in Lincoln road late last evening gutted a rear room and damaged several thousand dollars’ worth of stock. The heat cracke.d a large plateglass window on the street frontage. Mr D. Cook and G. Pool were the first to notify the brigade of the fire. “We were driving out from the city when we saw the smoke,” Mr Pool said. “There were a number of people standing about, but no-one had rung the brigade. We set off looking for a street alarm but couldn’t find one, so we rang from a hamburger bar about a quarter of a mile away.” Mr R. Evans, owner of the building and of the business, Brent’s Drapery, said his stock at stock-taking had been worth about $BOOO. More than half had been lost in the fire. The fire was confined to a rear stock room in a singlestorey section behind a twostorey section. The room was gutted. One machine from the Sydenham station and one from Headquarters answered the call, which was received at 11.7 p.m.
