“D.D.T. Best For Porina Control”
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 14. If it had been decided to use any insecticide other than D.D.T. against grass grub and porina in Canterbury, it would have meant a financial blow to the farmers of the district, the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Talboys) said today. Mr Taiboys was expanding in a statement his recent remarks that D.D.T. was the “only economic weapon” available in the battle against grass grub and porina. The Minister said that the cost of applying D.D.T. wetmix would be about $l.BO an acre. This compared with about $5 an acre for lindane, probably the first substitute, and about $7 an acre if one of the organo-phosphates were used.
Mr Taiboys said that while oiled D.D.T. wet-mix had to be applied once every two to three years and lindane a little more frequently, the organo-phosphates must be used annually—and some-
times twice a year—to be effective against the grass grub.
He said it had been Inferred from some quarters that the use of D.D.T. marked a departure from the usual pattern of porina and grass grub control. It was widely known that D.D.T. had for the last 20 years or more been the spearhead in the battle against these pests, he said.
