Rain robbed Kent of almost certain victory over Essex on Monday, but the six points it gained from the drawn match put Kent back on top of the English county cricket championship. The reigning champion, Yorkshire, which is two points behind Kent and Leicestershire, both with 132, suffered its second blank day in the match against Derbyshire. Scores:—

At Hove: Sussex 163 and 146/9 dec. lost to Surrey 119 and 195/6 <W. Smith 61) by four wickets. Surrey eight points, Sussex four.

At Leyton: Essex 152 and 159/7 (A. Dixon 6/61) drew with Kent 361/9 declared. Kent six points, Essex two.

At Lord’s: Nottinghamshire 203, Middlesex 88/2.

At Weston-super-Mare: Somerset 165 and 131 drew with Clamorgan 113 and 139/5. Somerset six points, Glamorgan two. At Wellinborough: Northamptonshire 216 and 31/1 dec. lost to Lancashire 86 and 163/5 <H. Pilling 77) by five wickets. Lancashire eight points, Northamptonshire four.

At Birmingham: Hampshire 177 (D. Brown 6/42), Warwickshire 27/0

At Cheltenham: Gloucestershire 123 and 72/1, Worcestershire 247 (C. Fearnely 63; D. Allen 5/75).
