Age Benefit

Sir, —I would like to point out to “Not Sixty” that in times like the present the prime responsibility for any person losing his job is the Government’s. Unemployment is brought about by the Government’s economic policy, which forces employers to put workers off or to curtail the hours of labour. That means there will be a number of workers who will have to register, and those who are over sixty will have to apply for the age benefit, or for the unemployment benefit. It appears that “Not Sixty” applied for the age benefit, and will have to wait for at least a month for financial assistance. Surely the Government will do its best to alter the Social Security Act, thus avoiding placing any hardship on those so affected.— Yours, etc., NOT CHARITY. August 14, 1967.
