RETURN TO SCHOOL

Effects Of Economy

The changed economic situation was causing more girls to decide to return to school next year. Miss M. P. Stevenson, principal of Avonside Girls’ High School, told the board of governors on Monday.

In addition to 640 pupils who had said they would definitely return next year, and a third form intake of 280, another 70 pupils had now indicated that they would probably return to the fifth and sixth forms, Miss Stevenson said.

A roll of 990 was a frightening possibility, she said. Further staff and accommodation would be required if it eventuated. Although a school of more than 900 was too big, the economic situation making people return was good because some able girls who would have left school too early would continue their education, said the chairman (Dr. G. Jobberns).
