February Holiday Plan Supported

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, August 15

Commerce, manufacturing, export, and shipping interests favour holding school holidays in February.

The Wellington School Committee and Parents’ Association, which suggested the change, said that meteorological evidence showed February was the hottest and most settled month of the year. The Associated Chambers of Commerce favour a shift of one month to begin school holidays in mid-January. A spokesman for the chambers said his organisation was aware it would be extremely difficult to obtain legislation to move the statutory holidays so as to break with the Christmas holiday tradition. The Manufacturers’ Feder-

ation would also like to see the summer school holidays moved on one month.

The Exports and Shipping Council is taking the matter up with the Government and the Federation of Labour. It wants the holidays moved from Christmas-New Year to February. A spokesman said the peak period for loading meat for export occurred in tire December holiday period, and this would be relieved by such a change. The Overseas Shipping Owners’ Committee also supports this view for similar reasons.
