Samoa Bans N.Z. Beef

(N.Z. Press Association) APIA, August 13. The Western Samoan Prime Minister (Mr Mata’afa) announced yesterday that to conserve foreign exchange no more salted beef or tinned corned beef would be imported from New Zealand. “It is unfortunate that the decision had to fall on tinned corned beef and salted beef but this could not be helped as substitutes and near substitutes of these New Zealand items are available in Apia at much lower prices,” said Mr Mata’afa. He said the situation would be re-examined if the country's foreign exchange position showed a marked improvement or New Zealand exporters offered more competitive prices.
