LONDON. August 14.
Thousands of “pearls” flashed in the sun yesterday when 15 of the few remaining pearly kings and queens of London met for the christening of the newest addition to their ranks—Kim O’Shea, a girl aged two months.
The oldest was the Pearly Queen of Bethnal Green, Mrs Martha Morris, aged 85. One of the youngest was “princess” Linda Marriott, aged 16, whose pearly mini-skirt, replacing the traditional long dress, neatly symbolised the changing times that are putting an end to the pearlies. The baby’s mother, “princess” Jean O’Shea, is also a member of the Marriott family, who have created their own dynasty among the pearlies.
They have been supplying kings and queens for 80 yean, and Kim represents the sixth generation since the first Marriott became a pearly king last century—in the days when these London costermongers, in festive costume richly studded with pearl buttons, were a familiar sight
