Scrappy Play In Basketball
With both the University and Wigram women’s indoor basketball teams involved in national tournaments out of Christchurch, only two senior games were played last night. Checkers drew the bye, but has a sufficiently large lead to maintain its top placing on the points table. Rex A was far superior to Rebels and Brighton was fortunate to beat Rangiora after a very scrappy match. REX V. REBELS Superior ball handling and shooting soon gave Rex a commanding lead and it found the loose-zone defence played against it much to its liking. Rebels were without their competent centre, C. Cook, and were unable to show any cohesion on attack. E. Young and R. Leask were both in good form and worked well for Rex. Rex won, 40-16. BRIGHTON V. RANGIORA Mishandling and inaccurate shooting marred play for most of the game. Rangiora had ample possession but was unable to make much use of it. Brighton displayed better courtwork but during the second half its play lapsed badly. Brighton won, 20-12. LOWER GRADES Brighton B 25, Taxes A 17; Rangiora D 18, Rangiora C 13; Shoga A 20, Burnham 11; Rebels B 22, Brighton C 6; Rangiora B 2, Rogues 0; Mairehau H.S. 12, Hagley H.S. 6; Stars B 18, Rex C 12; Shoga B 21, Teachers’ College B 18; Orients 18, Rex B 6; Masons 18, Deaf Girls 10; Teachers’ College A 22, Brighton B 15.
