Tennis President Calls For Support

Disappointment that affiliated members did not attend the Canterbury championships was expressed by the President of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association (Mr A. C. Felton) in his address to the annual meeting last evening.

Mr Felton said gate takings had been only $73.30 over the three days. “Without sponsorship and television fees we would have run at a loss/' he said. The most alive part of the association was the junior section, said Mr Felton. “They gave great support to us during the last season as they have done for many years. “We can no longer have our promising juniors drop out when they reach senior standard as has been the trend in recent years,” he said. “We have had many juniors who have reached senior standard but have not improved.” Affiliation.—“lt is shameful that we have clubs not affiliated to the association,** said the chairman of the management committee (Mr M. C. Healey). He was commenting on three clubs that disaffiliated last season mainly because they could not pay their affiliation

fees. **We hope to have these clubs back in the association next season,** he said. “The tennis barometer shows that tennis in New Zealand has thrived when the people have had less money to spend.** Notice of Motion.—A former secretary of the association (Mr G. F. Sheppard) expressed disappointment that his notice of motion seeking to amend -five rules of the constitution had not been allowed after it had been set down to be heard at the annual meeting. Last week the matter was deferred to a later date. Mr Sheppard said that the management committee had been insincere in its dealing with his notice. Indoor Courts.—A delegate of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Supporters* Club (Mr G. E. R. Atkinson) announced that the club intended to raise money to build two indoor courts at Wilding Park by forming a limited liability company likely to be known as Wilding Sports, Ltd. Preliminary plans had been drawn up but a site had not been chosen. The club had thought of an area on the present hard courts. Officers elected were:—Patron. Mr J. Mercer; president, Mr A. C. Felton; vice-presidents, Messrs M. C. Healey, F. H. G. Johnstone and E. Biddle; secretary, Mrs M. Clarke; treasurer, Mr B. W. Crofts; management committee, Mesdames B. A. Miles and L. Buxton, Messrs J. B. Anderson, R. B. Brown, S. F. Clarke, M. C. Healey. D. V. McNichol, T. A. F. Withers and A. C. Lee.
