Manapouri

Sir, —Mr Everist’s protest against raising the level of Manapouri may well be extended. The 4i per cent increase of power obtained by lake raising goes entirely to Comalco and at a cut price. What New Zealand is to get from Manapouri is the first 200 megawatts. Everything beyond that goes to Comalco, who will thus get more than two-thirds of the total power at a price so low that we shall lose thereby. Raising the lakes is expensive, destructive and unnecessary, except from the viewpoint of Comalco. — Yours, etc. ARTHUR LUSH. August 12, 1967.
