Plywood Industry
Sir,—You are to be commended for your leading article. The Irreplaceable indigenous timbers of New Zealand, especially the best logs, are being used in vast quantities for making inferior plywood, instead of being reserved for building timbers, especially joinery. In addition, the plywood manufacturers are in the position to reserve the best grades for their own door factories, and supply only the poorer grades to the opposition door manufacturers, who have on numerous occasions complained to the Industries and Commerce Department of the unfair treatment Obviously our complaints are at last being taken note' of by the department; hence the trade agreement
with Australia. Some years ago a shipment of rimu ply exported to England was almost impossible to sell, and eventually disposed of at giveaway prices. The policy should be to conserve our diminishing rimu supplies and not force the joinery manufacturers to ask for imports of the more expensive timbers from overseas as a substitute.—Yours, etc., R. L. SPARROW. August 6, 1967.
