Use Of Fluoride

Sir,—Now that the Ashburton water supply is fluoridated, should country children who attend school in the borough continue to take fluoride tablets? I realise that some children drink very little water at school, and that town children have the added benefit of vegetables, porridge, etc., which are cooked in fluoridated water. Would half a tablet be sufficient for country children in these circumstances, and is there any danger of an overdose?— Yours, etc., COUNTRY COUSIN.

August 1, 1967. [Dr. C. N. D. Taylor, director of the Division of Public Health, Department of Health, replies: “Children who five outside Ashburton and who do not receive the full benefit of the borough’s fluoridated water supply should continue to take one whole fluoride tablet dally. Those country children who attend school in the borough would not receive too much fluoride by drinking water at school.”]
