The maximum temperature recorded at Harewood was 56 degrees about 1 p.m. Austerity University students will have a bowl of soup and a little rice for lunch in the university cafeterias on Wednesday, August 9. The meal will cost 25 cents. The meals will be served as part of the Operation 21 campaign to raise funds for the Youth Against Hunger Campaign. The proceeds from the meals will be given to the fund. No ordinary cooked meals will be served. The soup and rice austerity meal is supposed to be typical of that of the average Asian family.
Pecan Nuts A Tauranga man has begun planting pecan nut trees. The trees take four years to produce the nut If they prove successful- he hopes to promote their growth throughout the North Island. Mr J. A. B. Stuart-Menzies, a former curator of parks in South Africa and Australia, said there was great potential for growing pecan nuts in the Bay of Plenty. Provided their quality compared favourably with those grown in America, they could be exported.
Hiroshima March About 1000 people marched up Queen street Auckland yesterday to commemorate the twenty-second anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. At an open-air meeting afterwards the marchers passed a resolution denouncing pacts such as AN.Z.U.S. and S.EJLT.O, with a solitary voice dissenting. About 100 people attended a meeting on Saturday organised by the Hiroshima Day Committee for Peace.—(PA.)
