Sea Tragedy
The foundering of the fishing trawler Rimu off Banks Peninsula on Friday with the sad loss of two lives is a reminder that modern technology has not sue* ceeded in divesting the sea of its perils, especially for those who earn their living in small ships. The seas worked by the Chatham Island crayfishing boats are particularly treacherous; and it should be one of the responsibilities of the official inquiry into the loss of the Rimu to establish whether the present marine regulations provide a sufficient margin of safety. Although some fishermen have been irked by the Marine Department’s policing of the regulations, all should welcome a thorough examination of the safeguards which have been devised for their protection.
