MINERAL SANDS

Research By Japanese (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 6. After 14 months of research at Gracefield on beach sands containing minerals, Dr. G. Kano is returning today from Wellington to Japan. He is a professor in the Department of Industrial Chemistry at the Fukui University. Dr. Kano said yesterday he had been working with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research since June last year investigating the flotation method, using fatty acids and tallow, for separating minerals—mainly titanium and zircon—from New Zealand beach sands. The D.S.I.R.’s work in that direction had been on magnetic, electrostatic and gravity methods. Dr. Kano thinks that with more development a combination of the chemical and physical means should be successful.
