COMPETITION FOR LIFE BOY CHOIRS

A new competition for Canterbury Life Boys was held in the Christchurch Technical Institute assembly ball on Saturday evening. Five choirs selected from more than 700 Canterbury Life Boys competed in the Canterbury final which was held to marie the fiftieth anniversary at the founding of the Life Boy movement. • The 34th Christchurch team (Avonhead) took first place with 160 points, 17 ehead of the Sth Christchurch (Shirley) team which was second. . The competition was opened by the chaplain of the 6th Christchurch team, the Rev. L. Jones. After the Canterbury area supervisor, Mr W. R. Johns, announced the results, the assistant supervisor, Mr W. F. Bishop, presented the 34th Christchurch team with the Sportagama Cup. Several district competl-

tions have been held during the kwt two weeks to select the flve choirs for the flpal on Saturday evening. jTo encourage the competition to be a team effort, the organisers required each choir to consist of at least 75 per ctent of the total team strength, said the Canterbury area supervisor, Mr W. R. Johns, yesterday.

As a result, several boys who previously had taken no Interest in singing had taken part in the competition were now quite keen, he said. The, competition was judged by Mr G. A. Macann of the Oxford Terrace Baptist Church and Miss G. Miller, ef the Christchurch ■ Salvation Army.
