NO SURPRISES IN S.I. TABLE TENNIS SIDE
The South Island table tennis team selected by Mr P. J. Collett (Otago) to play the North Island at Wanganui on August 19 contains no real surprises although some of the positions were keenly contested.
The team is:—Men: B. A. Foster (Otago), J. Armstrong, Ling Nan Ming and V. N. Brightwell (Canterbury). Women: Miss Y. M. Fogarty (Otago), Mrs T. May. Mrs Y. Boulton (Canterbury) and Miss M. J. Fogarty (Otago). Doubles: —Men: Foster and Brightwell, Armstrong and Ling Nan Ming. Women: Mesdames May and Boulton, Misses M. J. and Y. M. Fogarty. Foster and Armstrong were certain to be picked but the last two positions could have gone to 17-year-old K. J. Ward or W. T. Scott (Canterbury). After beating the No. 1 North Island player, A. R. Tomlinson (Auckland), at the South Island championships, Brightwell appeared to have an excellent chance. Ling Nan Ming will have to be taken on trust. He did not compete at the South Island championships and his form against the Englishmen was not good. At present he appears to lack a sound match temperament. Ward could well have taken his place. A member of the New Zealand team at the world championships, H. J. Waterhouse (Wellington), is a surprise omission from the North Island men’s team.
The North Island team is:— Men: Tomlinson, M. W. Borlase (Wellington), T. J- O'Carroll, and G. A. J. Frew (Northland). Women: Miss C. E. Johnson
(Hamilton), Miss J. E. Brown I (Hutt Valley). Miss V. M. Rolston (Hamilton), and Miss D. L. Wade (Bay of Plenty). Doubles: I
I— Men: Tomlinson and Borlase, O’Carroll and Frew. Women: Misses Johnson and Wade, Misses Brown and Rolston.
