St. Andrew’s Easily Beats Xavier College

Scoring five tries to one, St. Andrew's College outplayed Xavier College to score a decisive 20-6 win.

Led by a much larger and more mobile forward pack, the St. Andrew’s team took an early lead and continued to hammer its advantage for the rest of the game. The teams were:—

St. Andrew’s College.—F. Galloway; M. Moore (captain). I. Smith, G. Wilson; M. McEwan, M. Smith; M. Fisher; M. Sidey, I. Lockie, P. Graham, B. McLay, J. Masson, A. Fergusson, B. Mabin, H. Ruffell.

Xavier College.—P. Hammant; M. Moesbergen, D. Holmes, P. McGlinchey; P. O'Bourke, P. Consedlne; B. Cox, T. Foley, P. Doody, W. Brown (captain), B. Wallace, C. Fallon, B. B.

Clough, R. G. Clough, J. Sullivan. Referee: Mr J. M. Lang. Playing into a stiff breeze, it was not long before St. Andrew’s had scored, and although the score was three-all for a period, St. Andrew’s was superior in every phase of play. M. Sidey and H. Ruffell often burst through the line-outs and their forward rushes proved difficult to counter. After half-time Xavier showed a new vigour and although St. Andrew’s continued to score points the smaller pack of forwards excelled itself by gaining an equal share of possession for the Xavier backline. Both sets of backs, however, failed to show the enterprise expected in secondary school Rugby teams and seemed content to attempt to score tries from orthodox moves. The large, but surprisingly mobile, St. Andrew’s prop, Ruffell, showed out and his many bursting runs were a feature of the game. The No. 8, M. Sidey, and lock, R. McLay, were the dominant jumpers in the line-outs. Fisher was a tidy half-back who ran well from the base of the scrum, but outside him the fiveeighths hindered their fast three-quarters with cronfleld running. M. Moore showed great pace in scoring his two tries. J. Foley and W. Brown stood out in a Xavier pack which toiled hard. The centre threequarter, D. Holmes, was the best of the backs. Scorers for St. Andrew’s were M. Moore (2), M. Fisher, I.: Smith and J. Masson tries; Fisher kicked a conversion and H. Ruffell a penalty. For Xavier M. Moesbergen scored a try and. P. Consedlne kicked a field goal.
