Export Trade
Sir,—Dr. McMeekan attributes the fall in our wool prices more to our competitors than to the competition of synthetics. The policy of Argentina and Uruguay is in glaring contrast to that of New Zealand in maintaining our currency at an artificially high level, making it increasingly difficult for our farmers and others to compete without serious financial loss. This has recently been ably stated by Sir James Wattle. Instead of constantly appealing for greater production, apparently to be mostly sold at unremunerative prices, it is about time that the Government gave a rational explanation why it is pursuing a financial policy at such variance with those adopted by our competitors. Dr. McMeekan’s view that the long-term wool outlook is all right provided we put our house in order speaks for itself.—Yours, etc., V. WILKINSON. Ashburton, July 31, 1967.
