Age Benefit

Sir,—When a man loses his job and registers with the Labour Department for work, he is told, if he is over 60, to apply for the age benefit He thus receives no financial help for at least a month. An applicant who is under 60 receives the dole on the seventh day after registering as unemployed if there is no suitable job for him. Surely the Government will not allow this unfairness. It can cause much hardship.—Yours, etc., NOT 60.

August 1, 1967. [The district registrar of the Social Security Department (Mr E. B. Pyne) replies: “If a person over 60 years of age tells the Labour Department that he does not wish to apply for age benefit, he will be given a form to enable him to apply for unemployment benefit.”]
