Indonesian Celebration

The twenty-second anniversary of the declaration of Indonesian independence will be celebrated in Christchurch on August 17 by Indonesian students from throughout New Zealand. The students will entertain people who have shown hospitality to them with native songs and dances and a display of Indonesian arts and crafts.

Mr A. Cargo, the president of the New Zealand Indonesia Association (Canterbury), said nearly 30 students from the North Island, wiould visit Christchurch for the celebrations. They would be accommodated privately. This is the first time the celebrations have been held in the South Island. There were only two Indonesian students in Christchurch, he said, and they wanted to have the celebrations to repay the hospitality shown them by the people of Christchurch. The Canterbury branch of the association was formed in September last year. It had two aims—to see an Indonesian language class start at the Workers’ Educational Association and hold the celebrations for independence day in Christchurch. The students will also visit parts of Canterbury.
