RACING KUMAI WOULD BE POPULAR WINNER

Grand National At Riccarton Today

Kumai is on the threshold of greatness as a steeplechaser and he will securely establish his claim to such eminence if he wins the Grand National Steeplechase at Riccarton today.

It is possible that at least one of Kumai’s rivals—perhaps it will be Game Call—will have heavier backing.

But a Kumai victory today would be one of the greatest sporting achievements of the year one that would, or should, have an enthusiastic response from everyone. Summer-like weather earlier in the week gave way to showers and heavy skies yesterday morning, but there was no depression in the Kumai camp. “He couldn’t eat his breakfast for laughing when he saw that rain,” quipped Kumai's Wingatui trainer, H. A. Anderton yesterday. It would have taken much more than yesterday’s rain to have a marked effect on the ground, but every drop of it could have been helping to ease the task of one of New Zealand's most famous mudlarks. Five Rivals Kumai will have only five rivals today, but four of them, Koral, Game Call, Linred, and Robert Earl, supply a hard core of seasoned, competent steeplechasers, all with grand records at Riccarton. The combined efforts of these four horses have accounted for two Grand Nationals, two Lincolns and three Homeby Steeplechases. Linred has been something of the “bridesmaid” in the party, having found success elusive at Riccarton, but he has earned the respect of all after seconds in the Grand National, the Beaufort, and the Homeby last year. Amber Wine will not run in the Grand National He is almost completely recovered from injuries received in the Homeby Steeplechase and should be fit to run later at the meeting. Amber Wine’s Hastings trainer, T. B. McNeil, has been one to welcome the rain for his Winter Cup candidate, Tinsel.

The Winter Cup, second leg of the TA.B. double, has attracted a band of competent North Island milers. Besides Tinsel there are Kalott and Royal Theme, both accomplished gallopers in the wet, and Feiramor, which has proved fairly versatile. Southerners to advance in favour with the change in conditions include the Riverton light-weight, Willypay. The Jumpers’ Flat will be the first leg of the T.A.B. double.

HUMBER: Faded after disputing pace in main flat race at Marton last Saturday, but is free-goer which could be difficult to match in this class. MARINE: Finished strongly to win event for amateur riders at Marton last Saturday. Won double in high-weight class at last Wellington Cup meeting. FALSE PROBLEM: Four of six wins last season were on flat. Won three consecutive high-weights early last term. FLYING YORK: Runner-up In two starts ever hurdles at Washdyke last month. Was run-ner-up in this race last year. BLUE DEFAULTER: Second, but well beaten by Beyond, in Winter Hurdles at Trentham at last start. Vittoria Hurdles’ winner on first day at Trentham. No flat form but could be chance on heavy track. LORDTUCKEY: Has won six races this season but only one, an event for staying hacks at Blenheim in April, has been on the flat. His natural pace and stamina could make him a lightweight prospect. WINDVALE LAD: Has not been impressive in his crosscountry campaign this winter. At stage now where he : might find it hard to recapture his best flat form. i ARABIAN LIGHT: Won twice on

flat against moderate opposition last season. Latest success was in steeplechase for amateur riders at Washdyke last Monday week. MYFILOU: Form over country this winter has not been impressive but would have chance on flat if track became soft or heavy. OLDE CHELSEA: Has shown good form as hurdler but has yet to win his first race on flat. Doubtful starter after mishap in schooling last Tuesday. LORASTAN: Has previously raced well at Riccarton but could not be fancied on form last season. He had a solid campaign but failed to win a race. TOWN TALK: Beat staying hacks at Ashburton last spring, but did not win again until last month when he was successful as a hurdler at Washdyke. Not too reliable but capable on his day. VALBANK: Well beaten in Kennels Hack Handicap last Saturday. Form has not been impressive since he won his way out of maiden class at Westport last October. Symbol (i). JESTER JINKS: Last start third in Morven Handicap at Waimate on July 15. Win. two starts beforehand, was in event for open milers at Ashburton in June. TIME AND TIDE: Usual honest race for sixth in Brabazon Handicap last Saturday. Win three starts back was in open sprint at Ashburton. BASILIO: Pacemaker to straight in Brabazon Handicap but wilted badly in run home. Speedy but does not usually run his races out strongly. DANNY KAYE: Fair race for eighth after starting from outside position in Brabazon Handicap. Bad draw again this time, but could fare better in weaker field. RED CHIPS: Fresh-up sprint winner at Oamaru in June but not as impressive against open milers at Ashburton or Washdyke meantime. Could go better over this distance. COMBINATION: Has failed to weigh in at his last two starts but form beforehand was fair. Is consistent sprinter which could shape well on a soft or heavy track. GAY DOCTOR: Has plenty of pace but form all-round on present campaign has been disappointing. Best effort recently was second to Glamis Lad in open sprint at Washdyke early last month. AGRIPPA: Never really prominent in Brabazon Handicap when having first start since November. Could be improved by that run but may still need further racing before reaching peak. BENEFICE: Has not been raced much but has failed to show form in the last two seasons. MILLIE SMALL: Unlucky fourth in open mile at Washdyke early last month. Was “star” hack at C.J.C. autumn meeting. Due to break through for first open-class win. NEVER AGAIN: Smart three-year-old starting fresh campaign. Last of three consecutive wins was in Champagne Stakes at Riccarton in March. NATTER: Unimpressive race record last season but has shown high standard of fitness in track gallops recently. SIR LIMOND: Fifteenth of 19 in Brabazon Handicap last Saturday was latest of con,.J. e £ u . tlve open-class failures. TAKATUA: On last season’s form his chance could not be rated strongly, especially at this distance. TAXMAN: Liable to produce* good run as a sprinter any time but form not consistent enough to warrant strong confidence. Millie Small Jester Jinks Never Again SECOND LEG OF T.A.B. FEIRAMOR: Hag strong record as a miler. Record at Riccarton last season included

a win in the Great Easter Handicap and' minor places in the Jockey Club Handicap and Churchill Stakes at the N.Z. Cup meeting. MANANA: Versatile performer over most distances but manages a mile as well as any. Has grand record on his home track and is in right order to be a strong contender. FAIRLANE: A mile is probably a shade beyond her best distance but would have to be seriously considered if the ground became heavy. Was “star” open sprinter at this meeting last year. TINSEL: Prefers a soft or easy track but has shaped well lately in training and could go well on top of the ground. Beat open sprinters convincingly at Trentham two KALOTT: 8 Showed by winning run in Brabazon Handicap last Saturday that she can handle any type of ground. Is very fit and is bound to be among the top fancies. BELLTANA: Struck a solid patch of form earlier in winter, but would have to improve on latest efforts. Promising fourth among milers at Washdyke last Monday week but snowing in Brabazon Handicap was weak. BEAU SUPREME: Last start winner among open milers at Waimate Success, two starts beforehand, was over middle distance on his home course at Washdyke. Usually runs his races out well when given time to get balanced. GLAMIS LAD: Has won two open sprints on his home course at Washdyke during his autumn and winter campaign. Made ground for ninth after being last away in Brabazon Handicap. Would come strongly into favour if ground became heavy. KRAZIKID: Runner-up in two of three starts on his present campaign. Close second to Kalott in Brabazon Handicap last week. In right form to improve on last year’s fourth in this race. ROYAL THEME: Strong late run for third in Brabazon Handicap last week. That was his fourth consecutive minor placing in open class. Shapes as if he will run out a mile very strongly. WILLYPAY: Only bleak patch on recent record was last-start failure among open milers at Washdyke last Monday week. Beat Open milers decisively at Washdyke two starts earlier. Likely lightBOLdVnvaDER: Best showing on latest campaign was last start fourth in open sprint on final day of Wellington winter meeting. Did not

flatter in final gallop on Thursday. GAY GABADOR: Weak showing among open milers at Washdyke last Monday week. Middle distance form beforehand was very sound. Could run a good mile on testing track like MOGAMBO: Recent record does not suggest he will match or beat the best of others in this field. TERRAMYCIN: Well beaten in Whyte Handicap at Trentham but was runner-up in intermediate class there on the final day of the winter meeting. Has the pace to be thereabouts most of the way. WATALLAN: Beat open milers convincingly when having second race in high grade at Washdyke last Monday week. Ran another sound race for fifth in Brazabon Handicap. Will probably be one of the strongest fancied light-weights. Kalott i Royal Theme Feiramor 4.30 p.m AVONHEAD HANDICAP,

FAIR BEHAVIOUR: Sound race for fourth after check near half-mile in Camla Hack Handicap last Saturday. NEW MINT: Weak showing in hack mile at Washdyke last Monday week but capable of much better. Usually runs well on home course. SUPERSPAN: Gained three wins and a fourth from five starts last season. Must have chance on that form.

FARMER'S GIRL: Faded to ninth after disputing much of pace in Camla Hack Handicap last week. Speedy but would be preferred over a little less ground. COSETA: Weakened slightly in last, furlong of nine to finish sixth in Kennels Hack Handicap last week. Won over this distance at Riccarton in April. MOT GUILTY: Failed to show up in hack mile at Washdyke last Monday week when making fresh start. Background last season was consistently good. SPANISH FOX: Sixth in Camla Hack Handicap last Saturday broke lengthy sequence of minor placings. Honest but is finding success elusive. HIGH BANK: Strong late run for fourth in Kennels Hack Handicap last Saturday. Won at Ashburton and Amberley during autumn. RUNNING SCARED: Slow away then covered a lot of extra ground in Kennels Hack Handicap. Could be hard to beat with more favourable run. FLOWING GOLD: Consistent place-getter which shaped particularly well in his final trial on Thursday. WATER DEER: Form has been weak since winning at Riccarton and Orari in April. HIS LORDSHIP: Improvers third in hack sprint at Levin last Wednesday week. Won his way out of maiden class on this course at Easter. MEPHISTO: Consistent placegetter but has yet to win his first race in the South Island. CEDAR BANK: Good second in hack mile on heavy ground at Washdyke early last month. Showing on firm track at Waimate was not up to same standard. DAM BUSTER: Last start fourth at Amberley in May but still eligible for maiden races. LORD JIM: No form in two starts to date OUR WYN; Novice Stakes winner at Wihgatui in June but weak form in three starts meantime. ROYAL VILLAIN: Weak showing in Montgomery Handicap last Saturday. Second in maiden mile at Washdyke at previous start. STARLESS: Ninth to finish in Kennels Hack Handicap last Saturday. Fairly consistent but has had eight starts since winning in maiden class at Riccarton in March. SHIPBOARD: Made immediate impression with convincing win in Montgomery Handicap last Saturday. Should match up in this class. SUN BANK: Finished well back after check near five furlongs in Camla Hack Handicap. Form beforehand was only moderate. SCORN: Runs an odd good race but form all-round not impressive. SURRIGO: Strong late run from mid-field for third in Camla Hack Handicap. Shapes as if he will run a very good mile. WE HAVE FUN: No form of worth in three starts since winning maiden event on heavy track at Washdyke in April. WHY HARP: Fair race for seventh in Camla Hack Handicap last Saturday. Has gained three minor placings since winning in maiden class at Wingatui in April. YOUNG BARON: Finished well back in Kennels Handicap last Saturday but good second at * Waimate at previous start—his second in a fresh campaign. Shipboard Surrigo His Lordship |
