Firm Overseas List, But Market Easier
Some good rises by overseas shares on New Zealand stock exchanges yesterday were offset by the continuing easy trend in the New Zealand list, which had 21 falls to six rises. Turn-overs were variable, but the range of trading narrowed.
B.H.P. recovered 50c, to 9855, in active trading. Closing prices were: Auckland, 980 c; Wellington and Christchurch, 985 c; and Dunedin, 980 c.
Mount Isa Mines rose 20c to 360 c, and Colonial Sugar recovered the 5c lost during the week.
Ampol gained 3c on the strength of the news of A,C.l.’s interest in Ampol Exploration, and the retailers. Coles and Waltons, each rose Ic, to 111 c and 81c respectively.
Boral gained 2c to 184 c in Dunedin sales. The only overseas share to
ease was Woolworths, 1c cheaper to 109 c. Among New Zealand shares Charles Begg recovered 5c to 85c.
Insurances continued to rise. New Zealand rose 3c to 252 c and South British was 1c dearer, at 330 c. J. Wattie Canneries recovered 1c to 180 c. Notable falls were—Felt and Textiles, NX, 20c to 245 c; Firth Concrete, 23c to 140 c; NX. Newspapers, 10c to 250 c; Winstone new shares, 10c to 310 c; Canterbury Frozen Meat, 3c to 108 c; NX. Refrigerating, 3c to 95c; Southland Frozen Meat, 3c to 156 c; Rex Aviation, 5c to UOc; Fletcher, 2c to 145 c; Golden Bay Cement, 2c to 107 c; Prestige, 3c to 92c; U.E.B. Industries, 1c to 87c and the rights 1c to 12c; Wright Stephenson, 1c to 126 c; NX. Breweries, 1c to 127 c; General Foods, 1c to 101 c.
SYDNEY
The market continued a strong upward trend on the exchange yesterday. The highlight of trading was the increased interest in the mining section and the mark up of B.H.P. Hamersley Holdings were again well traded with the fully palds gaining 30c to 740 c whilst the contributings rose 30c to 000 c. Mount Isa also stood out when the shares rose a further 36c to 425 c. B.H.P. put on 45c to 1100. The all ordinary index reached an all time high of 400.28, a gain of 5.46 on the previous day. The turnover of 1,399,000 was heavy. MELBOURNE Western Mining opened at 2200 in' response- to the company’s report on nickel ore reserves at Kambalda. Shares eased to 2150 before closing up 80c at 2190. Other mining leaders had solid gains In the buoyant trading. Mt. Isa gained 28c to 426. Oils were ateady. Industrials continued to firm with rises covering falls by a wide margin. B.H.P. was again the main attraction and closed ait 50c at the top of a sales range 1170/1200 in heavy trading.
