AUST. LEADING BADMINTON

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON.

Australia took a 5-3 lead, winning all four singles matches, on the first day’s play in the Whyte Trophy badminton match against New Zealand last evening. The remaining eight matches will be played today.

The Australian captain, G. Robotham, caused the upset of the night by beating the New Zealand No. 2, D. Higgins. Showing his best form of the tour, Robotham dictated play with excellent positional shots. Higgins was not at his best and gave away many points. The Victorian champion, R. Young, flown to Wellington on Wednesday as a replacement, had little trouble beating the New Zealand No. 3, D. Gloyn. Caused Second Upset Australia also won two women’s singles. Mrs W. Cassidy, playing in her first international, beat Mrs H. Robson, of Auckland, to cause the second upset of the evening.
