Precedent Set

(N.Z. P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, August 4.

The United States Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday voted 11-5 to approve the Supreme Court appointment of Mr Thurgood Marshall, the first Negro to be named to the highest tribunal in the United States. All the opposing votes were cast by southern members of the committee who had subjected Mr Marshall to close and critical questioning. The nomination will not go before the full Senate until a fortnight next Monday, according to the committee chairman, Mr James Eastland. He said this was agreed on to allow time for the preparation of majority and minority reports.
