Relief Work For 1490
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 3. About 1490 men were employed in relief work provided by Government departments, said the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) tonight. Last Monday 1600 relief jobs with Government departments had been approved and most of these would now be filled. Mr Shand said he could not confirm a television report that it was costing the Government $40,000 a week to provide the 1490 men with employment. The jobs were provided by several departments and wage rates depended on the type of work being done, said Mr Shand.
