Bridge Of Remembrance

Sir, —No doubt the City Council has plenty of jobs for our unemployed men, but may I suggest the cleaning of our Bridge of Remembrance as a work of urgency? The bridge is very black with dirt, and has required cleaning for some years. To us old soldiers who marched over the old bridge, its present state is a disgrace. It would seem that our present civic authorities

have no memory of those that paid the supreme sacrifice. Perhaps the R.S.A. could take this matter in hand.— Yours, etc. DIGGER. July 21, 1967. [The City Engineer, Mr P. G. Scoular, replies: “The cleaning suggested is not recommended. To be effective the whole structure would have to be cleaned, and any improvement would only be of a comparatively temporary nature. It is considered that, with a structure of this type, the natural aging adds dignity and maturity.”]
