University Council
Sir,—lt is to be hoped that the Canterbury University Students’ Association will not be discouraged from its attempts to regain representation on the university council by the negative attitude of the present members of that body. The assertion of several council members that student representatives would be acting only as delegates is ridiculous; if carried to its logical conclusion, what else are the representatives of the Government, the professorial board, the lecturers, and the post-primary teachers? The vice-chancellor’s statement that it is obvious that the council is not the best place
for students’ Interests and abilities is not convincing. The other three major universities in the country all have student representation. How do the circumstances differ at Canterbury?—Yours, SIMON NATHAN. Greymouth, August 2, 1967.
