Negro Despair
Sir,—There is a large measure of truth in the allegation of Dr. Martin Luther King that Congress “prefers rats to Negroes.” It is no uncommon thing for a baby to be attacked by rats in its cradle, and sometimes even killed. American Negroes have had very real grievances for the last hundred years since their emancipation; but unfortunately they are not united as to what they want. Some are in favour of enclaves which in practice would operate similarly to the South African Bantustan, and a proposal to this effect is being considered by Congress. The present multi-racial policy is disastrous'and can only lead to more bloodshed. Abraham Lincoln’s words, when he signed the Emancipation Proclamation, were almost prophetic: “I can conceive of no greater calamity than the assimilation of the Negro into our social and political life as our equal...” —Yours, etc., D.V. August 2, 1967.
