Play Centre’s Birthday
The twenty-first anniversary of the Hawarden Play Centre will be celebrated on August 19.
Many past and present members of the organisation are expected to attend, as well as six representatives of the Christchurch Play Centres’ Association. !
The centre, which was opened in 1946 In the Hawarden R.SA Hall with a roll of 10 children, expanded quickly. But it was not until 1962 that the centre had its own home—a house in Nelson street—to accommodate 30 children.
By the end of last year, extensions were completed to the house to comply with the New Zealand Play Centres’
Association rules and to take more children. From opening day, the centra has provided a valuable community service to the district and has had strong support from residents, foundation members and supervisors. For several years pupils of the Hawarden District High who were studying child welfare, helped supervisors. When it was decided to establish the centre in bigger premises, a donation of £125 was made to buy a site. But a building permit could not be obtained to construct a new centre.
