MUD FLUNG ON ROOFS

Water-spout At New Plymouth (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 3. A water-spout roared on to East End beach at New Plymouth, this morning. At 10 a.m. a column of water and spray estimated to be 40ft high came in from the sea, whipping up grass and mud on the foreshore and flinging it over roofs and telephone wires at the seaward end of Nobs line. Workmen in one of the houses first saw the spout when it was three miles out at sea. “It was moving fast," said Mr N. G. Sanger, “and it picked up speed about 100 yards off shore. When it hit the road it picked up mud and grass and turned black.” “The roar was terrible,” said Mr A. P. Williams, who was repairing a driveway.
