Hong Kong
Sir,—You are quite right when you say in your leading article that there is much wrong with the treatment of the Chinese in Hong Kong by the British authorities. In reply to legitimate demonstrations by the Chinese, the British have replied with the time-worn tear-gas bombs, and the killing of Chinese. This has been going on for 100 years, since Hong Kong was forcibly extracted from the Chinese. Do people in the West still think they are superior to the Chinese? Listen to the remarks of the father of Han Suyin in "The Crippled Tree.” “In your association with the foreigners, be not too lofty; cultivate a slightly confused, casual aspect Let their insults, deceitfulness, arrogance, contempt for everything they do not understand, glide over you; try to look somewhat stupid, this is a good way of facing a difficult situation. . . Yours, etc, P.J.A. July 13, 1967. '
