TROTTING Holy Hal Given Chance At Stud
Holy Hal has started his stud career early in life. But it could be an auspicious start for this season’s champion three-year-old. Earlier in the year he was mated with three mares and one of them was Colwyn Bay, the dam of Cardigan Bay.
Colwyn Bay, which has not had a foal for three seasons, has returned a positive test to Holy Hal. She is due to foal early in November.
Colwyn Bay, for all her 19 years, is still in wonderful condition. Her last foal was the Hal Tryax filly, Margot Bay. This sister to Cardigan Bay was unplaced at her only start to date, the Southern Stakes, for three-year-olds, at Invercargill in January.
The other mares with which Holy Hal was mated before leaving for an autumn campaign in Australia were Cardina and Lightning Lass. Cardina. a 16-year-old by Dillon Hall from Play Voyage, is the dam of the Kindergarten Stakes winner, Kildare Kate. She is also a sister to Walnut Hall, which established a Southland two-mile record of 4min 21 4-ssec at Gore in 1950. Lightning Lass is a nine-year-old daughter of Lighterman Tom and the Dillon Hall mare, Perfect Lady. Her sire, a son of Light Brigade, is now at the stud in Australia. He is a half-brother to the cupclass pacer, Dundee Sandy, and to Cherry Blossom, the dam of Robin Dundee, Donald Dundee, and Dundee. Holy Hal has not been put
back into work yet Since his return from Australia he has been spelling on the Edendale property of Mr D. Keenan, one of his partowners. Shy Breeder Since she foaled Donald Dundee In 1961, Cherry Blossom has proved a shy breeder. For that reason she was turned out to run with Blue for a time early last season. He got her in foal but she slipped a filly last spring. Although Cherry Blossom will be 20 next month hopes are still high that she will breed again. It is intended to send her to First Lord next spring. This should be an interesting mating for First Lord and Cherry Blossom were both sired by Dillon Hall. Racing Well The former Southland pacer. Tactile, continues to race well in the United States. Last Thursday night the seven-year-old son of Hal Tryax and Tactics finished a elose fourth in the Bye Bye
Byrd Pace at Yonkers Raceway. . Tactile was run down in the straight after making much of the pace in the $25,000 mile event The race was won by Good Time Boy by a head from Pocomoonshine. Nelson Guy, which was a head badc third, beat Tactile by three-quarters of a length.
Good Time Boy paced the mile in 2min 1 3-ssec. On the same track the previous week Tactile had gained a decisive win in a $15,000 Junior Free-for-all. On that occasion he paced the mile in 2min Isec.
