WELLINGTON, July 13.
The Union Steam Ship Company might have to consider cutting or abandoning its services to Eastern ports unless trading results improved substantially, a company official said today.
The general traffic manager (Mr C. F. Watson) said today that while delays did occur in New Zealand, the latest departure date of a ship to the East in the last six months was 20 days after the date originally announced. All too frequently, he said,
delays occurred at Eastern ports through difficulties involving clearance of cargo through customs before it could be unloaded, and congested port conditions at some places. Industrial troubles in Eastern ports also added to the shipowners’ problems, he said. Union Steam service to Eastern ports had been uneconomic for many years, said Mr Watson. So far, he said, the limited growth which had taken place in the trade had not yet made it a worth-while proposition.
