MAGISTRATE’S COURT Driver Disqualified After Pursuit

After driving at speeds greater than 70 miles an hour during a pursuit of four miles and a half by a patrol car in Sydenham and Spreydon, Malcolm Charles Davies, aged 19, unemployed, was fined $7O and disqualified from driving for two years by Mr J. D. Kinder, SM., in the Magistrate's Court in Christchurch yesterday. He pleaded guilty to a charge that on June 18 he drove a car recklessly. “For four miles and a half the car was pursued in a built-up area,” said Traffic Sergeant H. J. McMorran. “The area was wholly restricted to 30 miles an hour and is closely settled. The lighting, apart from that on Moorhouse avenue, is only fair.

“The defendant said he had wanted to see how good the traffic officers were. He said it was the best fun he had had in weeks.”

“I wish it hadn't happened,” said Davies, “but I suppose it’s a bit late now.” “Well, now you know how efficient the patrols are,” said the Magistrate. “You showed a complete disregard for the safety of others. If anyone had stepped on to the road, or if you had met another driver, you would not be alive today and neither would they.” Traffic Sergeant McMorran said that at 12.30 a.m. a patrol car had been on Moorhouse avenue. The officer in the car had seen another travelling west, at a checked speed of SO miles an hour. The red “stop” sign on the patrol car had been flashed on and a traffic officer had signalled with his torch. The accused afterwards admitted seeing the signals.
