CIGARETTE FIRES

Makers Asked

For Warning

Tobacco and cigarette manufacturers spent a “tremendous” amount of money on advertising, Mr M. C. Healey said at the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board on Wednesday evening. It would be reasonable to ask them to include in their advertising reference to the danger of fire.

On the latest statistics it appeared that $400,000 damage was caused by fires started by cigarettes, tobacco or matches, Mr Healey said. “That is more serious than the fires caused by the odd kerosene heater being knocked over,” he said. “And the figures are for insured losses only, so the actual loss could be a lot greater.”

Tobacco companies could well devote a little money from their advertising budgets to a warning of fire danger, he said.

The board agreed with Mr Healey that his suggestion should be put to the Fire Service Council.
