HEATHCOTE WATER

60p.c. Rise In Rate

The Heathcote County Council’s water rate has been increased by 60 per cent to return an estimated $15,521 more.

Last year the rate was .3d in the £ of capital value. The rate this year, which was fixed by a special meeting of the finance committee, is twotenths of a cent in the $. Mr C. D. Le Comte, the chairman, said yesterday that the council was completing a $114,000 project to extend the domestic and industrial service. It had been envisaged that the county would have been able to offset the extra charges; but with the national economy as it was it was possible that plans might not materialise as quickly as envisaged. Meantime, the council had to meet its expenditure.
